Unless you’ve been living under a rock, the UK news over the last few weeks has been dominated by the General Election and on the 4th July, voters took to the polling stations.
With a landslide victory, a Labour Government is now in charge and regardless of who you voted for, we can all agree that there’ll be changes that impact the construction industry.
Here’s how some of the industry leaders reacted to the news and what it could potentially mean on a number of issues from the topic of the housing crisis to the skill shortage.
Heads up, contractors! Changes are coming to building safety regulations in New York City. From now on, if you're working on a project that tickles the sky at seven stories or more, get ready to buckle up for stricter safety measures.
This means no more winging it on safety plans. To get your project off the ground (literally!), you'll need a certified site safety coordinator and a plan that's been stamped with approval. This applies to new builds, full demolitions, and even interior gut jobs with fancy mechanical equipment.
Why the shakeup? NYC is prioritising safety on construction sites, and smaller contractors who might not be familiar with the city's permitting process could be most affected. The article recommends bringing in the pros to avoid delays along with the other need-to-know regulations

What’s more important - Thinkers or Doers? Ideally, we’d probably all agree a mix of both right?
This is something that is proving to be a big talking point across the industry.
There's a lot of questions and many factors that need to be taken into consideration to understand the right fit when hiring.
All of these change what the ideal candidate fit will be along with a host of other points.
That said, there's a growing shift that started in 2023 and has continued in 2024, with senior decision-makers prioritising those with proven track records who’ve been there and done it before. We're in a fortunate position as a leading recruitment specialist within a number of niche sectors across construction of being able to see this first hand.
Our CEO, Tom Wood shared his thoughts on recently on his Linkedin channel that you can see here highlighting that “many owners and CEOs we’re working with currently are consistently moving away from "concept candidates" and towards hiring "doers".
This article from Bain really drills down into the importance of separating thinkers from doers along with the impact of both to a business.
It’s no secret that the construction industry is a male dominated industry. For years, the construction industry has grappled with the challenge of attracting more women to its workforce.
That said, this recent article from ConstructionDive showcased an optimistic take around the increasing number of women across the US who now make up 10.8% of construction workers, compared to 9.1% a decade ago.
The construction industry is clearly witnessing a gradual but positive shift and while the pace of change may seem slow, the trend itself is undeniable. This optimism is further bolstered by encouraging signs within the industry's culture which has often been the biggest blocker. However, construction companies, trade unions, training providers, and even government agencies are working together to create a more welcoming environment for women.
All positive signs that times are changing and whilst there are hurdles to overcome in terms of skills development along with opportunities, this recent article shows that no doubt we will see more women in varying roles across construction which is great.
It feels like all anyone talks about these days is AI and how it’s going to change the future. Whilst it’s still in it’s infancy, there’s no doubt that it’s going to have a huge impact on many industries and workforces specifically within construction.
It may be overblown (for now) that machines are going to take all the jobs within construction, there’s definitely trends to keep an eye on around how it could shape the future of the industry.
Who knows what the future holds - Maybe there'll be a Robots Construction Union demanding software upgrades and new silcone chips. We could even see drones carrying construction workers up from home and flying them to work to avoid costly traffic jams.
We're obviously joking but the positive impact it could have in terms of systems, technology, productivity to name a few are endless. There’ll be similarities and differences depending on what sector you're in within construction but this recent article from Glass Magazine talks about how AI may shape the future specifically for the glass industry.
